The Unplag team has recently delivered the feature able to spot replacement of characters in the text checked for duplications and provide a complete list of matching sources.
Online, December 23, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Unplag (unplag.com), an online similarities checker, has released the character replacement feature detecting unoriginal text even if all the characters in the scanned writing are substituted by the similar ones taken from other alphabets.
Having carried out a number of researches on what way students might successfully defeat plagiarism detection tools, the Unplag team made a decision to add the character replacement feature to its anti-cheating functionality. Additionally, it allows to identify similarities regardless of the types of fonts used. This increases educators' chances to find copy-pasted works.
"With so many tech-savvyy students willing to make their plagiarism unnoticed, it's always necessary to upgrade the checker functions and conduct multiple tests on whether the system can be easily tricked or not," said Anastasia Parokha, Chief Marketing Officer, Product Owner at Unplag. "Knowing that a lot of students resort to automatic character replacers or can manually change characters, we developed the feature highlighting any changed symbols, be it Latin, Cyrillic, Greek or any other writing system."
Replacing characters is one of the most widespread tricks. The text may have 100 percent matches, but the checker failing to spot such substitutions will find it to be completely unique. Then, the only thing left to do is to change the most frequently used letters like a, e, o, etc. in all the words.
To prove that Unplag is able to tackle the problem efficiently, the Unplag team ran a series of test checks by scanning articles taken directly from news portals for duplications and then changing vowels and consonants into their "twins". As a result, the number and titles of the original sources found in both cases remained unchanged. The similarities rate remained unchanged either. This meant that the feature was implemented successfully and became available for individual and corporate users in their Unplag accounts.
